Shelby Cobra – Spicy Texas Chili, 427 Style

In the mid 1990s, I had the pleasure of spending the day with Carroll Shelby. After walking through his LA based shop and viewing the latest in development, Shelby was entertained enough to invite me to dinner. We saddled up and landed at an Italian restaurant in West LA. Old school, checkerboard tablecloth, wicker chianti bottles, real candles at the table, but a genuine informality and honesty about the food and conversation. So I had to ask, “What in the world were you thinking when you shoehorned a 427 engine into the Cobra?”

Shel leaned in and said “Hell, no one was really thinking back then. It was all seat of the pants, run-what-you-brung, and go BIG. If we thought too much about it, it would have never been done.”
