1969 “Brand X” (Palliser Winkelmann WD-B-2 Chassis #6)

1969 “Brand X”

Sex, infidelity, theft, intrigue, a lightly raced car, a tragic airplane crash and a pack of lifelong friends…some famous, some not—this is the twisted tapestry of this month’s Hidden Treasure. The story begins in Woodside, California in the 1950s. Locke de Bretteville says he fell in love with racecars at age seven when his 18-year-old brother went off to Yale University and put him in charge of his Road & Track and Motor Sport magazine collection. De Bretteville said, “Those magazines forever changed my life, and it all began with the Vanwalls and Stirling Moss…never did like Hawthorn.”

By the time he left for college, de Bretteville was a walking motorsports encyclopedia. During college he worked as a “go-fer” for a number of SCCA racers. He also became acquainted with Sam Posey who was an alumnus of his high school. According to de Bretteville, “Sam was doing the USRRC at the time, the Can-Am was just starting, and that just fed my racing hunger.”
