The Sussex Trophy race at the Goodwood Revival 2015 was held Sunday 13th September at the 2.4-mile, 7-turn Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England. A sell-out crowd watched as stunning 1950s sports racing prototypes raced in the last race of the weekend.
The 2015 Sussex Trophy race featured World Championship sports cars and production sports racing cars from 1955 to 1960. The likes of the Aston Martin DBR1 and DBR2, Ferrari 246S Dino, Lotus 15, Jaguar D-Type, Lister Knobbly and Costin and Maserati 250Si, 300S and Birdcage models were all perfectly suited to perform around fast, sweeping curves found at Goodwood.
The race for sports racers of the late 1950s was ultimately won by Bobby Verdon-Roe in his ex-North American Racing Team Ferrari 246S Dino. However, for 25 minutes he had to battle with a Chris Ward handicapped by the fact that his Costin-bodied Lister-Jaguar had been stuck in fourth gear from the third lap. Verdon-Roe had to use all the track and more to take the win.
The pair was well ahead of the rest of the field and a great scrap for third place. Sam Hancock’s Lister-Jaguar Knobbly and Andrew Newall’s Aston Martin DBR2 were still tied together at the end, the Lister just taking the final podium place. Marino Franchitti worked hard to stay with them in the little ‘Birdcage’ Maserati Tipo 61 but the worth of power told and he finished fifth.
