Monterey Car Week (2013) – Corvette for Monterey

In honor of the 60th anniversary of Chevrolet’s Corvette, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion has selected “America’s sports car” as the featured marque for next August’s edition of the annual vintage racecar festival at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

A large turnout of Corvette racers is expected to be on hand as representative examples of each of the car’s six generations in competition will be joining in the anniversary festivities. Corvette previously enjoyed featured marque status in 2002.

“Corvettes and racing have been inextricably linked since the very moment Zora Arkus-Duntov slipped behind the wheel for the first time,” said Chris Perry, Chevrolet’s global vice president of marketing. “His spirit is felt in today’s winning Corvette Racing program, which continues a proud legacy and one we’re looking forward to celebrating next summer.”

Corvette’s lengthy racing heritage began at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1956 with three Corvettes under Duntov’s direction, and by 1960 Briggs Cunningham was taking a trio of Corvette racecars to Le Mans where John Fitch and Bob Grossman gave the marque a grand debut by winning the GT class and running 8th overall. Corvette Racing has since won its class at the French classic seven times, most recently in 2011.
