Northern California
For the 22nd annual running of the California Mille, 66 cars, built between 1927 and 1957, took the Italian flag for the start of the 1000-mile, 4-day tour and braved 3.5 days of gorgeous weather and one of excess humidity. Leaving San Francisco, across the picturesque Golden Gate Bridge, they headed through Lodi wine country to Lake Tahoe. With a daylong sidestep into Nevada to taste Basque food and sample the Virginia City hillclimb route, they returned to Incline Village, and the following day snaked across the Central Valley into the gorgeous Napa Valley wine country. The last day’s drive involved more great wine country roads on the way to Bodega Bay and back into Calistoga for a final dinner and awards.
