The MG Vintage Racers’ Newsletter celebrates its 30th anniversary this month, having been around longer than a number of vintage racing organizations. Founded in December of 1981 by MGTD racer Greg Prehodka with 40 of his MG racing buddies, it has helped MG racers stay in touch with each other and share information. Today it reaches more than 250 MG racers in North America, and 64 of them celebrated the anniversary early at last September’s Lime Rock Park Historic Races.
More than 100 people attended a special MGVR anniversary luncheon that featured Skip Barber and John Fitch as guest speakers, and where the usual MGVR awards were given out. Beyond maintaining communication, the newsletter has helped promote All-MG races with various racing organizations, and shared articles on MG racing with various publications.
MGVR’s support helped attract a record-breaking 143 MGs to Watkins Glen in 2004 for the 50th anniversary of the Collier Brothers Memorial Trophy (an SCCA award, as opposed to SVRA’s MG award, the Collier Cup), and in 2006 they worked with the Hallett racetrack in Oklahoma to get an “All MG” race weekend in celebration of the newsletter’s 25th anniversary. For more information on MGVR, visit the web site at www.MGVR.org. The group’s “Focus Event” for 2012 will be at Grattan Raceway in Michigan on August 17–19 with VSCDA, which will tie in with John Twist’s famous Summer Party celebrating the 50th anniversary of the MGB.
