Forty-two years after winning the 1969 SCCA Formula Continental crown in Marvin Davidson’s Milestone Eagle, Tony Adamowicz is once again king of Formula 5000, having claimed victory in three of the five F5000 Drivers Association revival races to secure the 2011 title. Driving the same 1969 Eagle Mark 5-Chevy he took to the title in ’69 (now owned by Doug Magnon), Adamowicz won at Watkins Glen, Mont Tremblant and Road America to claim both Class A (pre-’72 cars) and overall honors.
Seb Coppola took 2nd in both the Class A and overall standings with his ex-Jack Eiteljorg Lola T192-Chevy, while Barry Blackmore finished 3rd overall and won Class B (post-’71) with his 1976 Lola T332-Chevy on the strength of class wins at Mont Tremblant and Road America.
Adamowicz, who also earned the Briggs Cunningham Trophy for Outstanding Inspiration and Sportsmanship at the Coronado Speed Festival, offered his “deepest thanks and gratitude to Doug Magnon, of the Riverside International Automotive Museum, and master mechanic Bill Losee who made the Eagle perform. The RIAM crew was always behind me in my quest for the championship.”
Completing the top 10 in the points were Jim Stengel (’73 McRae GM1) 2nd in B, Coronado and Infineon B winner Paul Wilson (’73 March 73A), Coronado and Infineon A winner Bruce Leeson (’76 Lola T332), Kurt Engelmann (’71 Lola T192), Eric Haga (’70 Lola T190), Rick Parsons (’76 Lola T332) and the team of Bruce Sevier and Bill Blake (’68 Lola T140).
