Augie Pabst is one of the practitioners of the skillful art of road racing from the early days of North American road racing. He began as did so many others of his contemporaries in the 1950s, went on to race with Briggs Cunningham’s team, and from there went to the John Mecom team. He drove a wide variety of cars, won three national championships, but left racing to form his own shop now run by his son.
He raced in the Cunningham team’s cars and the Harry Heuer Scarabs against the best of North American and European talent, against such drivers as Jim Hall, Roger Penske, Dick Thompson, Ken Miles, and many, many others. He was part of the Mecom team, which put the hurt on the Cobras of Carol Shelby at the fall 1963 Nassau Speed Weeks in the only Lola Chevrolet coupe to escape the notice of the Ford Motor Company. John Wright caught up to the energetic Pabst in his offices in Wisconsin.
