In 2003, Mercedes-Benz and McLaren Automotive joined forces to create the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, a modern tribute to the legendary 1950s 300 SLR racers driven by icons Juan Manuel Fangio and Sir Stirling Moss. This new SLR combined advanced technology with stunning carbon-fiber bodywork, staying true to the SLR legacy.
In 2006, a higher-performance version, the 722 Edition, was introduced in honor of Moss’s unforgettable victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia, a race that remains a milestone in motorsport history. The ‘722’ designation refers to the 1955 Mille Miglia win by Moss and his co-driver Denis Jenkinson, whose Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR sported the number ‘722,’ reflecting a 7:22 a.m. start time.
The example presented here is an all-black Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition which features several upgrades over the standard SLR , including a 641bhp engine, stiffened suspension, and lowered ride height. Externally, the 722 Edition features a revised front air dam, rear diffuser, 19″ wheels, and 390mm brakes.
Red ‘722’ badging, black-tinted headlights, and tail lights complement the exterior, while the interior boasts carbon fiber, black leather, and Alcantara. Capable of outperforming the standard SLR, the 722 accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 337km/h. Only 150 units of this special edition were produced.
This rare and sought-after black ‘722’ was originally purchased by a German customer and has seen minimal use. Having accumulated just 3,200 kilometers, it remains in exceptional, like-new condition. Set to be auctioned by Bonhams Cars on October 6, it comes with German registration documents and all original books, including the unstamped service book due to its low mileage.
