The Shelby GT500, which was discontinued after the 2022 model year, held the title of the most powerful production Mustang until the arrival of the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD, which boasts over 800 horsepower.
As the ultimate version of the sixth-generation Mustang, the Shelby GT500 features a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine that produces 760 horsepower, enabling it to accelerate from 0-60 MPH in just 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 180 MPH. But can it outperform an Italian supercar like the Ferrari 296 GTS in a drag race?
The Ferrari 296 GTS comes with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and a single electric motor, combining for a total of 819 horsepower. Both cars are equipped with dual-clutch automatic transmissions, but the Ferrari’s lighter weight gives it an additional edge in performance, as the 296 GTS is significantly lighter than the GT500.
Tim Burton, the host of the Shmee150 YouTube channel, is set to find out by pitting these two machines against each other in a series of drag races.
