The 2006 Ford GT is an important slice of the American carmaker’s storied history. It is inspired by Ford’s infamous GT40 racecars of the 1960s. Some design themes like the low-slung profile, wide bodywork and drooping nose are direct carryovers from the classic-era GT40.
Built to showcase the best of Ford’s engineering capabilities, the Ford GT delivered uncompromising performance that placed it at par with more established rivals from the likes of Ferrari or Lamborghini. The ultra-low stance offered minimal drag, allowing the supercar to maximize the potency of the 550-hp 5.4-litre Supercharged V8. The Ford GT was rear-wheel-drive and received power from the engine via a 6-speed manual transmission.
The sleek supercar could rocket to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, and on a long enough straight, it would continue accelerating until it maxed out at about 203 mph.
Ford built just over 4,000 units of the GT from 2004 to 2006. This example listed by Bringatrailer is, however, much more exclusive. The 2006 Ford GT is one of only 343 Heritage Edition examples produced. What’s more? The front hood bears the signature of Hockey Hall of Fame member Wayne Gretzky. It is a Canadian market spec imported into the United States in 2010.
The GT is finished with a Gulf-inspired exterior coat of Heritage Blue and Epic Orange, similar to the livery worn by the 1968 and 1969 Le Mans-winning GT40. It sits on factory-optioned forged aluminum BBS wheels. Other add-ons include the Ford GT graphics, HID headlights, fog lights, vented hood, front splitter, rear diffuser and a center-exit exhaust system.
The interior is mostly laid out with Ebony leather. Similarly colored rubber mats cover the bare aluminum floors. The Sparco seats are manually adjusted and feature carbon fibre shells with GT40-style ventilation grommets and harness slots.
This 2006 Ford GT has barely been driven, adding to its overall appeal. There are only 94 miles on the odometer, some of which were added by the selling dealer, probably during a test drive. The Carfax report shows no accidents or damage with previous registrations in Ontario and Virginia.
The bidding for the Heritage Edition Ford GT is $513,000 at the time of writing. It will probably go much higher as the cut-off date approaches, considering the Ford GT’s almost-new condition and, of course, there is that signature on the hood.
