There is obsession…and then there is obsession! How about a Web site that is attempting to provide photos of every single car to compete in every single sports car race since 1948?!?! God, we love fanaticism!
Hard to believe, but true. This month’s featured site is building a positively massive database of sports cars. Starting with the Mai-Pokal-Rennen at Hockenheim in 1948, this site lists literally every major (and some minor!) international sports car race up through 2005. Pick through any of the hundreds upon hundreds of races listed and you’ll see a sub-menu that lists all the available data on the race (time, place, entry list, program cover) as well as an entry for every single car entered. Where available, each entry will also include a photograph of that car at that race, as well as information on the drivers, finishing position, etc.
While the entire database is incredibly unwieldy, you can search it into smaller subsets, (ie, Le Mans, Can-Am, IMSA, World Sportscar, FIA GT, Interseries, etc.) For many of the races, the database is complete and includes a photograph of every single entry, for others there may be only a handful, but the Web site’s host encourages visitors to submit photos to fill in the voids.
In case you haven’t noticed, we were bowled over by this site, but we have to caution you—DO NOT VISIT THIS SITE IF YOU DON’T HAVE A LOT OF TIME TO SPARE—it is seriously addictive!
