Frank Williams of Williams Grand Prix Engineering had long coveted the idea of having Ayrton Senna drive one of his Formula One cars, an idea the Brazilian was equally keen to explore. The retirement of Alain Prost at the end of the 1993 season provided the opportunity both had been waiting for and Senna left McLaren to join the Williams-Renault team. Many in motor racing saw this as one of the dream combinations and enthusiasts envisaged classic on-track battles between the established Senna and the newly emerging Schumacher.
