The German automaker continues to add models to the new Cayenne platform, with the Turbo E-Hybrid being the latest entrant with its unveiling earlier today. While this latest trim doesn’t captain the roster of quintessential SUVs based on price—that spot is still occupied by 631 hp Cayenne Turbo GT—it will provide more mainstream appeal in an evolving electrification landscape.
Unlike the aforementioned GT-derived hauler, the new Turbo E-Hybrid is also available in the traditional SUV body style, while the former is exclusively produced in coupé format. This will naturally give the latest model much broader appeal and likely, significantly more market share and the optics that go along with it.
What “E-Hybrid” Means This Time Around
Of course, the big deal here is the hybridized 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 engine supplemented by a 25.9 kWh battery and 174 hp electric motor. This alliance allows the plug-in hybrid power unit to produce a total of 729 hp and 701 lb-ft of torque, enabling the 2.5-tonne SUV to rocket from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 183 mph. That also makes it the most powerful Cayenne ever produced. Porsche claims that up to 50 miles of range is possible if the SUV is driven by the electric motor alone.
We’re more likely to see the target demographic of E-Hybrid customers using all that performance potential for activities like towing, while daredevil types will look to the GT to provide more extreme thrills. But for those who want the best of both worlds, a GT Package is available, which adds wider wheels, carbon ceramic brakes, aerodynamic elements and a titanium exhaust system straight from (you guessed it) the Cayenne Turbo GT. However, the package is exclusive to coupé versions and is for select markets only.
Even sans the GT add-ons, the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid is still a pretty mean machine, with features such as adaptive air suspension, sport seats, rear-wheel steering, and PDCC, being standard or optional on the new SUV. Furthermore, an 11 kW on-board charger helps to expedite the charging process for this high-performance PHEV.
The Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid can be ordered now and they will arrive as 2024 models early next year. In traditional body styling, the Turbo E-Hybrid has a base MSRP of $146,900 while those who opt for the coupé version will be subject to its slightly higher base MSRP of $151,400. In markets where it’s available, the GT Package adds on about £20,000.
