An Immaculate Piece of Automotive History
The Mercedes-Benz 300SL is a car that all car collectors know and want to have in their collection. Well, now they can. This 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL is one of just 1,400 Gullwing coupes built. It is for sale at Bring A Trailer.
The car was delivered to its first owner on March 7, 1957, in Belgium. It remained there until 1981. From there it spent 22 years in the UK. Then it was imported to Vancouver three years later. The car went through a body-off restoration between 2014 and 2016 by Thornley Kelham in the UK.
During the restoration, the car was painted the current blue-grey and received a rebuild of its numbers-matching 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine. The engine is mated to a numbers-matching four-speed transmission. There’s also an original 3.64:1 rear differential.
The vehicle gets Bosch fuel injection, blue upholstery, some plaid cloth seat inserts, and a Becker Mexico radio. The car is being sold after a detailed inspection, service, and correction of various cosmetic details. It’s offered by the seller with a copy of its factory build sheet, a set of three belly pans, an owner’s manual and tool kit, documentation of the restoration, and a British Columbia registration.
At the time of this writing, the bidding is up to $1,150,000 and there are four days left on the auction.
