If you’ve ever wondered what goes on inside the intake manifold of a turbocharged engine, between the throttle body and the cylinders, do we have a video for you!
This video by Warped Perception on YouTube shows what it looks like when you go partial throttle, blip the throttle, and in some cases even go wide open throttle. It’s also extremely relevant as turbocharged supercar engines are becoming more and more prevalent as the quest for more horsepower and torque heats up into hypercar territory.
While many who read Supercars.net understand the internal workings of engines, there really is no replacement for actually seeing it happen.
The manifold itself, with the injector rail tight to it, and the 2JZ-GTE engine to the left of thatIn a manifold holding 12-16 PSI of air pressure, you get a great view as the incoming air forces it’s way down the velocity stacks of the manifold, mixes with the fuel from the injectors, and get sucked down into the cylinders.
Handy labeling!It’s also worth noting that when coming off throttle, during the blowoff phase, you can actually see quick flashes of the compressed air expanding back up the velocity stacks. This is especially noticeable in the third intake.
When coming off throttle suddenly, like in a shift, the compressed air expands and also blows back a little of the fuel from the injectors.This view is similar to what you would see inside such turbocharged beasts as the Porsche 911 Turbo S, the Bugatti Chiron, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, and the like.
