Full List of Every Aston Martin Model Ever Made
The very first car, ‘Coal Scuttle’, was registered in 1915, a second car was not finished until 1920 after the Great War had ended. Initially, AM built successful race cars in the 1500cc light car category but despite their success on the track, production and sales were slow and Bamford & Martin went into receivership in 1925. During this time, only 61 cars were built of which 25 are known to have survived to present day.

Aston Martin's ‘Second Century’ plan started with the exciting new DB11, the replacement for the DB9. The DB11 showcased a totally new design, an all-new 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine and it was built upon a new lighter and stronger, bonded aluminum structure. The DB11 was followed by the DBS Superleggera and shortly thereafter by the all-new and equally important Vantage replacement (also called the Vantage). Finally, Aston entered the world of luxury SUVs with the launch of the Aston Martin DBX. For more information on the current range, please check out our current Aston Martin model range page.

The limited production run of 77 examples of the Aston Martin One-77 kicked off Aston Martin's first foray into the top end of the supercar market. When it was first shown at Concorso d’Eleganza in late April 2009, it wowed attendees and got the rich guys scrambling to put down a deposit. Three years after production of the One-77 had ended, Aston Martin introduced a track only spin-off called the Vulcan, limited to just 24 examples it was probably the most extreme Aston we have ever seen.
Since then, Aston Martin's supercar aspirations has escalated. The top of the heap is the Aston Martin Valkyrie with its absolutely amazing looks and one of the most impressive internal combustion engines ever produced, a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine that produces 1,176 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Other supercars below the Valkyrie include the upcoming Valhalla and the next-generation Vanquish.

Just before WWI, Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin decided to build their own cars. They formed Bamford & Martin Ltd in 1913 with that goal in mind. They soon changed the name to Aston-Martin (1914). Their first car was the ‘Coal Scuttle’ which was registered in 1915. Despite success on-track, the production sales never took off. A new era began in 1926 when the new company of Aston Martin Motors Ltd. was incorporated (Bamford & Martin went into receivership in 1925). The company delivered small and cleverly engineered lightweight sports cars that were premium-priced and while financial success was always elusive, it was definitely a great era in terms of cars.

David Brown bought Aston Martin in 1947 and quickly thereafter also purchased the Lagonda company too- combining the two to become 'Aston Martin Lagonda'. In 1948, the Two Litre Sports (retrospectively known as the DB1) was introduced, based on the Atom Prototype . The DB1 was superseded by the DB2 complete with the 6 cylinder Willie Watson designed engine. The 2 seater DB2 was an exceptional post war sports car and achieved notable success in motorsport. In 1953, Coronation year, the addition of two small rear seats made the DB2 into a 2+2; and thus it became the DB2/4. Production of road cars at Feltham was wound down and everything gradually moved to Newport Pagnell.

Management believed that Aston Martin needed a powerful V8 model to really grow the company beyond its straight six heritage. They took the relatively new DBS (released in 1967) and two years later gave it a V8, becoming the Aston Martin DBS V8. Unfortunately, financial success still did not materialize and after Aston Martin was sold as a company, several revisions were made to the V8. Sales still didn't materialize thanks to the oil crisis and the company then ended up being put into administration in 1974, until it a multinational consortium of enthusiastic businessmen took over in 1975. The first new car from the new owners was the spectacular Lagonda, followed quickly by the V8 Vantage which was the fastest car in the world. Constant upgrades and changes were made to the V8 Aston Martin cars all the way up till 1990.

The Virage was the car to bring Aston Martin into the competitive 1990s. The V8 had soldiered on for long enough and was struggling to compete by the mid 1980s. The replacement retained the front mounted V8 engine driving the rear wheels, platform chassis and hand formed aluminum skin over a steel structure. The four seater Virage GT was unveiled in 1988 and was joined by the convertible Volante version soon after. Over time the Virage was phased out and the standard car was restyled with many styling cues from the Vantage and called simply the V8 Coupe (we still include it in this family for our analysis). If you wanted something extra special, you could call the Works team or any number of third party specialists to create something a little nuttier and more expensive. The 1990 Aston Martin cars were definitely falling further behind the competition, keeping the company alive thanks to their strong handbuilt V8’s, very exclusive build numbers and their aggressive and very British looks.

The straight 6 cylinder coupe version of the DB7 was unveiled to lots of excitement in 1993. It was joined by the convertible Volante in the 1996 model year. For true enthusiasts, the best DB7 was the V12 engined Vantage which got crowds excited when it was unveiled at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show. During 2002, two more DB7’s were announced, the limited edition DB7 V12 Zagato and the DB7 V12 GT. In 2003 there was also a very limited edition DB AR1 roadster, with its stunning Zagato body made just for the U.S market. By the end of production, the DB7 had become the most successful Aston Martin ever with a little over 7000 examples completed.

The V12 Vanquish was a triumphant return to form for Aston Martin. A classic V12 engine that loved to rev, the car stood atop the lineup from 2000 till 2007. Production started at the refurbished Newport Pagnell factory and deliveries to customers commenced in the Summer of 2001. In the Autumn of 2004, Aston Martin introduced the ultimate version of the V12 Vanquish, known as the ‘S’, with the 520 bhp and capable of hitting 200 mph. In early 2007, Aston Martin announced the final version of the V12 Vanquish S, the Ultimate Edition which saw an end to the Vanquish production (V12 Vanquish was replaced by the DBS as the new top dog). During its production, two special modified cars based on the V12 Vanquish were built. The weird Bertone Jet 2 and the Zagato roadster.
In early 2000, the core plan for Aston Martin was development of a totally new and unique bonded and riveted aluminum platform which could easily be be made in differing lengths for different cars in the range. This platform, now known as VH architecture was used for a host of cars from 2003 till 2019. The DB9 was undoubtedly the star of the 2003 Frankfurt Motor show where it was unveiled to the public for the very first time and it was the first to be built on the VH platform. The stunning body was designed by Ian Callum and is still considered by many the best looking car of all time. Production of the coupe started in early in 2004, with the DB9 Volante starting a year later. The Geneva Salon 2005 was the venue for AMV8 Vantage concept, Aston's new V8 idea. While the V8 Vantage was built on VH architecture, we gave it its own section below given how important it was and how many variants we made (it needed a lot of space on this page). New cars were developed on the VH platform which was updated a lot over the years. In 2009, the production Rapide was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show and then another addition was the Aston Martin DBS, based on the DB9. In order to bridge the gap in the range between the DB9 and DBS, the Virage was introduced at Geneva in 2011.

The seeds of the Aston Martin and Zagato partnership were sown over six decades ago at the 1960 Geneva Auto Show where Technical Director Gianni Zagato met with Aston boss David Brown. That meeting soon led to the creation of the first project car - the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato. Today, that collaboration has spawned several models that blend the signature styling of the car maker and design powerhouse.
