HMSA Laguna Seca Invitational (2014) – Recap & Photo Gallery

The Historic Motors Sports Association (HMSA) held a LSR Invitational event on June 3-4, 2014 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The mid-week testing session saw a nice selection of historic racing cars challenge the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course in Salinas, California.

Similar to HMSA Club events, the LSR Invitational featured historic production cars built through 1972 and purpose-built Formula, Sports Racing and IMSA and Trans-Am cars built through present day. The run groups for the two-day June LSR Invitational were divided into four run groups, with each enjoying two 25-minute sessions in the morning and two 30-minute sessions in the afternoon.

The June 2014 running of the HMSA LSR Invitational at Laguna Seca featured many notable entrants, including Ned Spieker’s 1958 Maserati 200Si; Ernie Prisbe’s 1971 Ferrari 312 PB; 1959 Lister Costin Chevrolet and 1972 McLaren M8FP of Rob Kauffman; Greg Myer’s 1958 Devin SS; Erickson Shirley’s 1959 Lister Costin Chevrolet; Ranson Webster’s 1960 Porsche Abarth; Frank Altamura’a 1955 Porsche Pupulidy Special; Michael O’Callaghan’s 1969 Porsche 911; Jonathan Feiber’s 1960 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage; Henry Schmitt’s BMW 3.5 CSL and M3 E36; 1989 Porsche 962 of Erich Wilms and Charles McCabe’s 1955 Maserati 250F.

Similar to the 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and April 2014 events, Senior Photographer Dennis Gray also documented the June 2014 running of the HMSA LSR Invitational, offering the following images that highlight the quality participants. We split up Dennis’ 120 pictures into two galleries. The first gallery starting below features our favorite images, all displayed in the full-width view of Sports Car Digest, while the second gallery begins on the eighth page of the article and gives a comprehensive view of all the photographs.

Car of Interest, 1963 Shelby Cobra 289 – Lynn Park’s Cobra was owned and raced by Michael Goodwin, of Mickey Thompson infamy, during the late ’60s and in 1970. In 1971 Goodwin sold the car to Gary Burke, an accomplished Cobra racer who raced the car for three races and experienced three engine failures. The car was parked in 1971 and sat for forty years until Lynn bought it from Gary in late 2011, just in time to get it ready for the Cobra anniversary in 2012. During the forty-year storage, Lynn visited the car and even sold parts to Gary to make the car run, but Gary never got around to fixing it. Finally it made more sense to sell it than to keep it. Its period-correct SCCA roll cage, which according to Park adds significant stiffness to the chassis, sets the #98 Cobra apart from other ‘Snakes’.
