The 2014 Salon Retromobile was held 5-9 February at the Porte de Versailles Exhibition Center in Paris, France. The 39th annual Retromobile again focused entirely on classic collector cars, with more than 90,000 visiting the 450 booths spread over 44,000 square meters of exhibition space.
This year’s Retromobile classic car event paid tribute to land speed titans J.G. Parry-Thomas and Sir Malcolm Campbell, the 100th anniversary of the First World War and the Cars of the Maharajas with the Swan Car of the Maharaja of Nabha, several polished aluminum Rolls-Royces, cars for hunting tigers and ceremonial cars.
Retromobile also looked at the career of racing car enthusiast Jean Rédélé, paying tribute to him and showcasing Alpines from his private collection. Some fifteen road and racing cars from 1963-1978 were on public display for the first time, as well as objects from the Alpine racing division including bodywork molds, wind tunnel models, Gordini engines, trophies, among others.
Mercedes-Benz used the Paris event to launch their “120 Years of Motor Sport” celebration by focusing on brand’s motor racing successes in France. Highlights included a Mercedes Grand Prix racing car from 1914, the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R “Streamliner” that won the French Grand Prix in Reims and the Sauber-Mercedes C 9 that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1989.
Bentley brought one of the most famous cars in the marque’s history — the 3-Litre that won Le Mans in 1924 with John Duff and Frank Clement at the wheel — that started a period of domination for Bentley in the 1920s.
A Ferrari 330 P4 was on display, shown at the 2014 Retromobile with the Fiat Bartoletti truck that brought it to Le Mans in 1967 where it finished second among all competitors and first in its category.
JD Classics’ debut at Retromobile included an 11-car display, highlighted by a 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, ‘PLB 23’, the practice car for Sir Stirling Moss prior to his famous 1955 Mille Miglia victory. Other notable cars included the ex-Juan Manuel Fangio Jaguar C-type, the 1952 Jaguar XK120 Jabbeke Land Speed Record “Bubble Car”, a 1952 Ferrari 225S Vignale Berlinetta that won its class at Le Mans and a 1972 Lamborghini Miura SV.
