EVO magazine photographer Dominic Fraser, like most of his colleagues in the UK, is currently working from home under a strict lockdown.
Except… a photographer needs something to photograph. And so Dominic has broken out the Lego and his professional camera equipment, and is recreating classic Audi Sport Quattro S1 Group B scenes on his kitchen table.
The car itself holds a special place in Dominic’s heart, as it does for many a rally fan that grew up in the 1980’s. It was the rally car. Not just any one, but the one that defined rallying from 1980 to 1986 when Group B was cancelled.
Many classic rally cars, such as the Lancia Delta S4 Grp B with its twincharged engine, and the brutally fast Ford RS200 Evo, came about in this era. Still, none could match the Quattro S1 in terms of being a legendary icon.
Being such a popular car, it was, of course, photographed endlessly. Onboard film clips from the 1980’s show camera flashes never seeming to cease as the Quattro S1 tore through city streets and across rough terrain.
In an homage to these pictures, and also out of a fairly well earned sense of boredom, Dominic has recreated quite a few. Although they aren’t precisely accurate, we’ll let him have artistic license as it’s an ingenious way to pass the time in lockdown.
Of course, having the right lenses and appropriate remote shutter and lighting equipment helps, but is a little bit of fun that anyone with some spare Lego and a heapload of free time can participate in.
