Don’t Hold Your Breath
Ferrari will try to hold onto its gasoline engines for a while longer. According to a report by Reuters, the first fully electric Ferrari won’t come before 2025. The publication discussed the possibility of an electric supercar with Louis Camilleri, Ferrari CEO, and he said that the technology just isn’t there yet.
“The battery technology is not where it should be yet,” Camilleri said. “There are still significant issues in terms of autonomy, in terms of speed of recharging. So eventually we will come out with one. But it’s post-2025. Not in the short term.”
He went on to tell Reuters that the company thought about a fully electric grand touring machine but instead turned to hybrid technology. That path will continue for now. If Ferrari continues to see success with hybrids, 60 percent of all Ferrari’s sold could have a hybrid powertrain by 2022.
Ferrari isn’t the only company that has seen success in making hybrid supercars. McLaren and now even Lamborghini are drinking the hybrid supercar cool-aid. It will be interesting to see if companies like Lotus, which are more focused on fully electric powertrain technology will pass the others by. Hopefully, Ferrari’s decision to not make a fully-electric supercar right now doesn’t hurt them in the long-term.
