Mercedes‘ AMG division has confirmed that they really are in the process of developing a new hybrid hypercar which is expected to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show even this year.
The yet-to-be-named hypercar by Mercedes AMG is said to use a drivetrain plucked from Mercedes’ Formula 1 racing campaigns. So we can expect that a 1.6L turbocharged V6 will be powering the rear wheels, to go along with a pair of electric motors to power the front axle. Mercedes confirmed that the total system output of the said hypercar is going to be more than 1,000 horsepower.
The hypercar is also said to feature a carbon fiber body construction to make it as light as possible. Mercedes wants the car to have a curb weight as lows as 2,200 pounds. With 1000hp, the hypercar should be able to accelerate from 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and hitting at least 220mph. Mercedes also told us that the hypercar will be able to travel for about 16 miles on battery power alone.
We have reports from Auto Express that Mercedes will be only making 300 units of this AMG hypercar and that the pricing is expect to be over $4.5 million.
Although other hypercars such as the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1 are already out of production, the new AMG hypercar will still face some competition once it becomes available on the market. Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing will be also introducing their own F1-inspired supercar in 2018, while Bugatti has began sales of its 1,500hp Chiron late last year.
