1954 Ferrari 250 Monza

The 250 Monza is a great example of how Ferrari engineered different cars for specific clients and tracks. One of the first appearances of the 250 Monza was at the Monza Autodromo on June 27th, 1954. During this race, this very car, chassis 0442, placed third with Franco Cornacchia and Guerino Gerini at the wheel.

Much of the design elements for the Monza were shared with the 500 Mondial. They both featured four wheel independent suspension by means of a de Dion type rear axle. They differed mainly in the engine department. Enzo did not want to abandon the V12 powerplant so he built the 250 Monza with the intent to use the V12 engine.

The 250 Monza utilized the Columbo V12 engine which was nearly the same as the one found on the 250 MM. Each intake port was individual, not sharing the siamese-type setup of previous engines. This updated engine, combined with three 4-barrel Weber 36IF4C-1 carbs produced over 240 hp.

Only four examples of the 250 Monza were made, two with Scaglietti bodies and two with Pininfarina designs. Of the four, chassis 0442 is the only car to retain is original bodywork.

RM Auctions auctioned 0442 at their 2002 Monterey Sports Car Auction. The car sold at high bid of $ 1,705,000 USD.
