Bugatti Type 57S

1935 Bugatti Type 57S

The Type 57S was the most developed and final version of Bugatti’s Type 57. These models are typified by their lower, subaisse, chassis which was developed from Bugattis Compétition chassis.

The result was a fined and exceptionally capable supercar able to reach 125 mph. Bugatti’s London dealer described it as “A Sports Model introduced to meet the growing demand for a high efficiency car suitable for fast touring or for competing in Sports Car racing events.

Compared to the standard Type 57, the Subaisse has a shorter and lower chassis. The rear axle actually ran through the rear chassis beams. To reduce weight, the chassis was produced with 10 gauge steel (3.5mm) instead of 6 gauge steel (5 mm).

The Type 57S also received and updated and lowered radiator.

Production of the Type 57 was limited to 42 customer units of which some cars received some of the best coachwork available. These include the Atlantics and Atalantes which together make up about 1/4 of the total production.
