Superstitious? Not even a little bit? Are you one of those ritualistic types that wonโt (or canโt) climb into your racecar without first donning your lucky socks, bellaclava or underwear? Do you panic if your lucky penny isnโt in your pocket? Do you make a point of always circling your car three times before climbing in and buckling your right shoulder harness first? If so, youโre not alone. Of all the people Iโve known, racers, second only to actors, are the most superstitious.
Nigel Mansell, for example, has a particularly strong superstition regarding his helmet. If some curious paddock visitor should happen to try on olโ Nigeโs brain bucket, he will refuse to ever wear that one again. Potentially a very expensive superstition for the likes of you and me, but an endless supply of free helmets no doubt makes things easier for a World Champion. I tried to contact Mr. Mansell for his comments but he has yet to return my calls. (Maybe someone used his phone and now he wonโt pick it up himself.)
