The Put-in-Bay Vintage Sports Car Races are pleased to announce that โ50s-era competitor Ed Eichenlaub will be an honored guest at this yearโs event to be held September 21-24. The Modern-day PIB Sports Car Races have been held on Ohioโs South Bass Island since a small 2009 โreunionโ in honor of the original races (run through the narrow streets of Put-in-Bay in the โ50s and early โ60s) evolved into an increasingly popular annual re-creation of those races.
Ed will be on hand to recount his memories of racing at Put-in-Bay (and many other races of the era) at the wheel of a Triumph TR3 in 1956, a Porsche 1600 Super Coupe in โ57 and a Porsche Speedster in โ58. ย Not your average 91-year old, Edโs daily driver around his home in Chandler, AZ is a Porsche Cayman.
Featured marques for this yearโs event represent โquite a smorgasbordโ notes race director Jack Woehrle. On the menu are vintage Volvos, VWs and Saabs plus H-Modifieds of all flavors and the 2021 North American Turner reunion is mixed in. There will also be the usual array of entrants racing in multiple classes in four groups plus exhibition and non-racing participant categories for Heritage Street Cars (qualified pre-โ64 cars) and Guest Street Cars (generally post-โ63 to โ72).
The Put-in-Bay Sports Car Races event also includes: police-escorted tours of the original island course, a car show, rocker cover races, guest stories, and more — most of which are free and open to the public for viewing.
