Prior to the Second World War, simply driving a motor car in Europe was almost a noteworthy event, and thus motorsport involved a small percentage of that already small number of people. This exclusivity further meant that the number of women in motorsport was small. However, with the exponential improvement in living standards since the conflict, the resultant increase in affluence and attitudes has meant that many women have taken to the tracks and special stages of the world since.
