1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider – Sold for $5,115,000

Gooding & Company’s 2009 Pebble Beach Auction was held Saturday, August 15th and Sunday, August, 16th at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center in Pebble Beach, California.

Gooding & Company’s 5th annual auction, held in association with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, sold more than $50 million in sales and nine cars at more than $1 million.

The top five sales were the 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder at $5,115,000, the 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Drop Head Coupe at $4,180,000, the 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Roadster at $3,300,000, the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder at $2,750,000 and the 1953 Aston Martin DB 2/4 Drop Head Coupe at $1,650,000.

Other noteworthy sales included the 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series I at $1,540,000, Ettore Bugatti’s own 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Special Coupe (sold without reserve) at $1,375,000, the 1934 Mercedes-Benz 380 Sport Roadster at $1,078,000 and the 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 Competition Spider at $1,045,000.

Gooding offered 169 automobiles for sale, with 129 finding a new owner, reflecting a 76% sales rate. Total automotive sales volume was $50,753,850, inclusive of buyer’s premiums. The average price per car sold was $393,440.

Gooding’s 2008 Pebble Beach auction netted $64,790,300, boosted by the 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante Coupe that sold for North American record $7.92 million. Last year, Gooding sold 115 of 141 cars offered (82% sales rate) and the average price per car sold was $563,393.
