Although technically not a separate model, Chevrolet offered the 396 as an option on the SS El Camino. It continued the SS396 of 1968, but with updates for the 1969 Chevelle lineup.

The SS included the 396/325HP engine, power front brakes, a special hood and wider wheel arches to fit 14×7 inch sport wheels. Monaco Orange and Daytona Yellow were exclusive to the SS model.
