Top 10 Supercars Of 2014 – The Coolest, Best & Most Exciting Cars In The World This Year

Another year down and another year of amazing supercars. It was always going to be hard for 2014s best cars to match the loaded 2013 supercars with the LaFerrari, Porsche 918 and McLaren P1 trifecta plus a host of other tremendous cars. 

The 2014 best supercars, exotics and best drivers cars were once again an impressive bunch. At the top end and the clear winner for the year is the Koenigsegg One:1 our Supercar of the Year. We first met Christian von Koenigsegg at the 2001 Paris Motor Show where he was displaying his first car, the CC. Since then he has gradually improved it into the radical One:1.

In terms of perfect everyday performance, Porsche gives us the 911 GTS and the Cayman/Boxster GTS this year. The GTS models all get more powerful engines, more options all the performance boxes ticked plus a more sinister look. Think of this as Porsche speccing cars with all the options they think are perfect and then charging you less than it would cost to add those options yourself. This is the pick of the Porsche range for most people (outside the GT cars of course) and we can’t wait to drive them. 

As always there were several new Bugatti Veyron special edition cars, but they are literally marketing exercises now which is why none make our list. More worthy of our list was the replacement for the Gallardo. Known as the Huracán LP 610-4 it has seen a big uptick in tech and power with a design that only Lamborghini could get away with. It looks like a cracking car, Lamborghini nailed it. Also with a new model is McLaren, who went ahead and fixed all the issues we had with the 12C with their updated McLaren 650S Coupé and Spider models. Speaking of spider models, Aston Martin introduced the Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster S with its monster V12 up front and those classic Aston looks. That was almost as exciting as Ferrari giving us the 458 Speciale A, essentially a drop top version of the best car on sale right now. 

In 2014 we also saw the new generation BMW M3/4 with a twin-turbo inline 6 engine as well as a Charger SRT Hellcat that kept things old school by supercharging a massive V8 to get to 707 horsepower. In terms of the best concepts of 2014, we had Toyota give us their best hint yet at the future Supra model with their Toyota FT-1 concept. The Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4 is Lamborghini’s take on a hybrid GT and there is all sorts of talk that they may go ahead and actually build it, which is truly exciting.

Koenigsegg One:1

1 megawatt of power

For the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, Koenigsegg created the one:1 based on the Agera platform. Seven examples, including one prototype, were built during 2014 and 2015. Limited series of 7 cars producing 1341 bhp @ 7500 rpm. This was one of the most exclusive production car programs ever envisaged in the car industry. One:1 is named after its capability to produce 1 megawatt of power from a single car – it is the first homologated production car in the world with one Megawatt of power. The hp-to-kg curb weight ratio is an astonishing 1:1. To achieve this 1360 bhp, Koenigsegg had to redesign the turbocharger. Fixes All That’s Wrong With 12C

For 2014 McLaren updated the MP4-12C to have a front end more inline with the P1 supercar. The front bumper gives the McLaren 650S a dramatic, yet clean appearance that makes the 12C look plain. It is also quicker, more assertive and dynamically better than the 12C. The 650S badge designation refers to the power output – 650PS (641 bhp) – of the unique British-built McLaren M838T twin turbo V8 engine. ‘S’ stands for ‘Sport’, underlining the focus and developments made to handling, transmission, drivability and engagement. Automobili Lamborghini unveiled its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology demonstrator, the Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4, making its world debut at the 2014 Paris Mondial del’Automobile. Clearly a Lamborghini, Asterion is a conceptual car housing a plug-in hybrid powertrain designed to Lamborghini objectives: The Asterion defines a solution to significantly reducing CO2 emissions through technologies available today, guaranteeing the unique Lamborghini driving feel with a smooth and reactive driveability and with superior power, including an exceptional pure electric range of 50 km.Lamborghini’s first plug-in hybrid is the Asterion is powered by V10 5.2 liter FSI engine in conjunction with three electric engine to produce 910 bhp! BMW M3

It almost didn’t make the list

The M3 legacy is really the only reason this car made this list, because frankly it was kind of underwhelming. The launch of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe sees BMW M GmbH revealing a new interpretation of the high-performance sports car – and carrying the BMW M philosophy over into the fifth generation of the M3. More than 40,000 examples of the fourth-generation BMW M3 Coupe were built, and now the BMW M4 Coupe is poised to continue this success story. The “M4” badge is a reference to the model series that provides the basis for the new M model – and, for the first time, the Coupe will be introduced at the same time as the four-door variant. Logic dictates the latter will be christened the BMW M3 Sedan. The high-revving six-cylinder in-line engine with MTwinPower Turbo technology newly developed for the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe produces a maximum output of 431 hp. Its peak torque of 550 Newton metres (406 lb-ft) is available across a wide rev band and outstrips the figure recorded by the outgoing BMW M3 by roughly 40 per cent. And yet the engine also achieves a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of around 25 per cent. In 2014 Lamborghini will officially launch the Huracán which as their smaller alternative to the Aventador and the replacement for the most popular Lamborghini ever, the Gallardo. The Lamborghini Huracán is the perfect modern supercar. It looks futuristic and stands out in any crowd. It is chock full of the latest technology from advanced materials to streamlined aerodynamics and one of the most advanced V10 engines ever made. In 2014 Lamborghini officially launched the Huracán, the successor to the Gallardo. It had big shoes to fill given the Gallardo was the company’s best selling car. The two most powerful and fastest mid-engine sports models from Porsche are ready and raring to go: with uprated engines and excellent PASM chassis the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS set new benchmarks for sportiness in their segment. The independent front and a modified rear end, blackened bi-xenon headlights – with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) as standard – and exterior lettering in silky black gloss are subtle yet unmistakable features of the new top models. Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Coupé (991.1)

Porsche is sending its second generation of the 911 Carrera GTS to the starting line. Four models – a coupe and a cabriolet, each with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive – now close the gap between the 911 Carrera S and the street-legal sports car optimised for the race track, the 911 GT3. Some of the technical ingredients that generate even more driving dynamics and driving fun: 430 hp (316 kW) power, the Sport Chrono package and the PASM active damper system which lowers the car’s ride height by ten millimetres. Improved efficiency has also led to quicker accelerations and higher top speeds, but combined fuel consumption figures remain unchanged at the favourable level of the S models. When combined with the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), the 911 Carrera GTS sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds (Cabriolet: 4.2 seconds). The top speed of each GTS model is beyond the 300 km/h barrier; the fastest at 306 km/h is the Coupe with a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Learn more…

Bentley Continental GT3-R

Bentley announces the rarest and most dynamic member of the esteemed Continental family of Grand Tourers with the arrival of the new Continental GT3-R. The Ferrari F60 America is effectively an open-top version of the insane F12. The F60 America – named in celebration of ferrari marking six decades of selling cars in the usa – trades in the F12’s hardtop for a lightweight fabric roof useable at speeds of up to 80mph. But the F60 America is actually rather more than just a de-roofed F12. There’s fresh aluminum bodywork, too, with deeper side strakes, extra bonnet holes and more pronounced winglets. The F60 America will be limited to a production run of just 10 units. All have been spoken for, and though ferrari’s giving no hint on price, you can safely assume it to fall into the ‘eye-watering’ category. Learn more…

Based on the F12berlinetta, the car was developed at a client’s request as an extreme, two-seater, open-top sports barchetta. One of the initial inspirations for the project was the 1957 250 Testa Rossa. In fact, the F12 TRS is Flavio Manzoni and the Ferrari Style Centre team’s modern, innovative take on that legendary car’s spirit and pays homage to it in its moniker. Like all one-off Ferraris, the F12 TRS is the product of Ferrari’s now-classic approach of creating a truly integrated design.
