1996 – 1999 Ferrari F355 Spider

Ferrari F355 Spider

In 1994 Ferrari offered a convertible version of their 355 known as the Spider. It was developed exclusively by Pininfarina to have a semi-automatic soft top. Ferrari spent a lot of time (1,800 hours) testing the design in the wind tunnel, resulting in what many believe was the first aerodynamically driven blend of elegant style and performance. The semi-automatic soft-top was powered electronically (a first for Ferrari at the time).

Ferrari produced 3,717 Spiders from 1995 until 1999. 2,664 of these came equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission while the other 1,053 were sold with the expensive F1 electrohydraulic manual transmission.

Apart from the displacement increase from 3.4 to 3.5 L, the major difference between the V8 engine in the previous generation 348 and F355 was the introduction of a 5-valve cylinder head which ultimately allowed for better intake permeability and thus more power. The engine produced 375 hp.
